What if UNF had a football program...

A "What if?" Schedule

Who will we play?

As a start-up team, you have to schedule games against monster teams of the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision - Formerly Division 1). Why? Two reasons: Money and exposure. To be the best you have to beat the best...or at least take their money until you get there.

Elite teams, such as UF, Michigan, USC, Miami, etc, pay big money to weak teams (what UNF would be for a few years) to come to their joint and get the snot beat out of them. These livebait teams can easily fetch $600,000 - $750,000 per game in "guaranteed money" for this task.

That's a lot of money, but "in coming years, the going rate will be $1 million in guaranteed money," says Gene Smith, Ohio State Buckeye’s Athletic Director. With paydays like this, mediocrity doesn't look too bad, huh? Imagine getting that paycheck AND winning! I bet Virginia Tech hated writing that check to James Madison.

We'll play anybody anywhere

All of UNF's existing sports are in the A-Sun conference, which is fine for them to stay there, but the football team would be better served going the Independent Conference route for a while. There’s a benefit to playing as an independent for UNF. We wouldn’t have “conference” games which means we can play anyone, any time, and any place. Anyone that will to pay us and provide our program with the most exposure is ripe for scheduling.

I remember watching a game in which UCF was being slaughtered by some large school and the commentator saying basically that it sucks but, ‘this is what it takes for them to get exposure and get going.’  Although our time of being the new “punching bag” could be even shorter than USF’s, it is still a phase we’d have to go through.

Being in a conference other than Independent, especially a weak one, means we're saddled with playing teams from that conference during the "conference" part of our season - unless it's a big conference it is a conference where the victories carry less weight than the losses (i.e. the Sun Belt). Any team with a modicum of hope of joining the "elite" had better wipe the floor with each and every team in that conference and make an impressive showing out of conference.

Make a big splash as quickly as possible. With the recent talks and moves to expand conferences, being brought into one of those is our best hope. I read that a good idea for the SEC's expansion was balance; the writer thought bringing in a big program (such as Texas) and a smaller program (I won't mention his suggestion...since it wasn't UNF) would be better for the conference as a whole. His point, essentially, was that having the majority of the best teams in the country under one conference cheats the conference. A murderer's row of Goliaths fight amongst themselves to produce one half of the BCS championship game while an unproven or test team else gets a relative free pass.

Well, I love his idea.....only IF UNF could be the SEC's newest baby.

The first year, our inaugural year, it's important to have a couple of key tone setting games. There are 4 such games on the schedule: Florida, Navy, USF, and JU. These are games with extra meaning to them.

Who are we playing?

Take a look at the PRINT VERSION of the Schedule (it actually looks much better than the online version).

The Schedule is set to kick off in 2013..
UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA (HOME - EverBank Field)
Not much in the area of competition, but it would be an instrumental game for the start of our season/program.
UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA at BIRMINGHAM (HOME - EverBank Field)
The Prodigal's son returns? Nah, he's inviting everyone to his place!
at NOTRE DAME (AWAY - South Bend)
If we had to play a team all 12 games of the year, I'd take Notre Dame over everyone else.
OFF WEEK
at OKLAHOMA (AWAY - Gaylord Family Stadium)
Oklahoma is a good team...a good team to play, but the main reason that they're on here and also in this slot is Kevin Wilson. Whoever we get as a head coach, play his former school here.
SAMFORD UNIVERSITY (HOME - EverBank Field)
A fairly good FCS team that should result in a victory at home for us.
at UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA (AWAY - Bright House)
What magic could we create in Orlando?
NAVY (HOME - EverBank Field)
BIG matchup. This is the most interesting game of the year. Please read more on this one.
OFF WEEK
FLORIDA A&M (HOME - EverBank Field)
Florida A&M has 10 players on it's 2010 roster from Jacksonville. UNF needs to play and BEAT other Florida teams to gain respect with recruits.
at UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE (AWAY - Neyland Stadium)
Since the departure of Phillip Fulmer, the Volunteers have been less than impressive. How long will it take to rebuild us unknown, but to play before 100k+ screaming fans with a chance to win would be special.
at DUKE UNIVERSITY (AWAY - Wallace Wade Stadium)

Duke is far from being a powerhouse when it comes to football. Why wouldn't we have more than a fighting chance in this matchup?

at UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA (AWAY - Raymond James Stadium)
North vs South. Good vs Evil. Seriously, with both teams playing out of NFL stadiums, this matchup has the potential to be BIG.
JACKSONVILLE UNIVERSITY (HOME - EverBank Field)
A battle for the city! A battle for the Old Wooden Barrel! Or simply, a battle for bragging rights!
Who would you like to see us play?
